“God’s work, done in God’s way, will never lack God’s supply.” Hudson Taylor
Most of the time we write about life on campus – the joys and sorrows, laughter and tears of the college mission field. We try to give an honest picture of what’s going on with us and with our students, and invite you into our work through the labors of prayer for CNU.
In the last 9 years of ministry, we’ve reached a point several times where we also needed to be frank about our financial needs and ask for your help in that way, as well. And now is one of those times.
Right now we are facing a deficit of $7,000 as we close our fiscal year on June 30.
Currently we raise around $100,000/year to fund the IV ministry at CNU. About half of that is our salary (that’s a combined, gross salary for 2 people), and the other half pays for things like insurance and ministry expenses, training, and supplies.
This year, despite fundraising through our Sabbatical, we are falling short of our needs by about $7,000.
The bigger picture
There is a bigger, underlying need, however. Our deepest hope is to raise not just this $7,000 to get us back in the black, but to raise an additional $40,000 in new yearly support to enable us to take a raise.
Right now Eric is working 2 extra jobs to make enough money for our family to pay the bills. (Many of you know we have faced increasing costs with Beth’s medical issues and this has definitely played a part in our need.) We are grateful for the Lord providing for us through these other jobs but our real desire is to be fully focused and present on the CNU campus, and fully supported by our jobs with InterVarsity.
We don’t share this to be a burden or to ask for pity, but to sincerely share our hardships and ask if you can help. We are operating at max capacity and genuinely want those of you who know and love CNU IV to understand our situation. As Paul says in 2 Corinthians 1:8, “we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced”. It has been a hard road for us in the last few years, and our financial need is ever-present in our minds.
CNU IV in 2015 – 10 and 15 years
2015 will be our 10 year anniversary on staff with IV, and the 15 year anniversary of the current IV chapter at CNU. Though IV ministry was planted at CNC in the 1970’s, this is the first time that our school has had a thriving chapter for 15 continual years. Wow.
We share this to say, “Praise God for his good work!” And to ask if you’ll help us hit these milestones running strong. After running such a good race, we don’t want to stagger into a landmark year, limping because of monetary need. Sabbatical has brought us spiritual, emotional, and physical refreshment. Would you consider helping our chapter enter 2015 financially healthy, as well?
How you can help
In the last 15 years, we’ve sent 300+ alumni off into the mission fields of the workplace and the world. If each of you gave a $50, one-time gift, our end-of-year need of $7000 would be more than doubly met.
If you’re an alum, you also know we like to say that InterVarsity is “4 years for 40 years” – we invest in students for 4 years so that they can invest in others for the next 40+ years. Continuing this theme, if 40 of you committed to giving $1000/yearly or $100/month, you would easily supply our $40,000 in yearly support.
So this is our humble request and challenge:
Would you give a $50+ one-time gift before June 30, and step up to be one of our 40 alumni to raise $40,000 for CNU IV in 2015?

(Of course, we are deeply grateful for gifts in any amount, and for the support from all of you who are dear friends, local church members, and our neighbors in the Newport News community.)
We’re so blessed to have you as friends and ministry partners, and say again, with Paul, “We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love…for your faith in God has gone forth everywhere.” 1 Thes. 1:2, 9
